Small enough to send
Fits the limit you need
Choose 16 MB, 25 MB, 10 MB or type your own. The quality is worked out from the video’s length so it lands just under the limit.
Plays on any phone
Saves an MP4 in H.264 with AAC sound where your browser supports it, the format WhatsApp, Gmail and every phone play. Drop to 720p or 480p for a smaller file.
Private, nothing uploaded
Family videos and recordings stay on your phone or computer. Compressing uses your device’s own video encoder, so there’s no upload and no wait in a queue.
How to reduce a video’s size
Choose the video
Pick an MP4, a MOV from an iPhone or a WebM. It stays on your device.
Pick a size or quality
Choose a size limit such as 16 MB for WhatsApp, or a quality level. You’ll see the estimated size before you start.
Compress
Press Compress video and keep the tab open. Long videos can take a few minutes on a phone.
Check and download
Play the before and after side by side, then download the smaller MP4.
Questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is read and compressed inside your browser using your device’s built-in video encoder. It never leaves your phone or computer.
How do I make a video small enough for WhatsApp?
Choose the 16 MB limit and press Compress video. A smaller video sends faster and uses less mobile data for you and the people you send it to. For long videos, 480p keeps the picture cleaner at small sizes.
Why does it say my size limit is too small?
Every second of video needs a minimum amount of data to look like video rather than blocks. A long video can’t fit a small limit without falling apart, so we tell you before starting. Use a bigger limit, remove the sound, or trim the video first.
Why is it slow, and can I use my phone meanwhile?
Compressing video is heavy work, and here it’s done by your own device rather than a server. Time depends on the video’s length and your device: a recent phone or computer is much quicker than an older phone. Keep this tab open and on screen until it finishes; switching apps can pause it.
Which browsers work?
Recent Chrome and Edge on Android, Windows and Mac, and Safari 17 or later on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Recent Firefox on a computer also works, though it may save the sound in a format some iPhones won’t play. Older browsers can’t compress video, and the page will tell you so.
Will the quality drop?
Some, as with any compression, but you choose the balance. High quality looks almost the same as the original, and the size-limit mode gives the best picture that fits. Compare the before and after players before you download.
