Every number you type updates both calculations, so you see the difference straight away instead of filling in two forms.

HRA calculator built in

Enter basic pay, HRA and rent, and it applies the three-way HRA rule for you, showing which limit decides the tax-free amount.

The working shown

Slab-by-slab tax, the ₹12 lakh rebate, surcharge and 4% cess are laid out line by line, so you can check them against Form 16.

How to calculate your income tax

  1. Pick your age group

Below 60, 60 to 79, or 80 and above. It changes the old regime’s tax-free limit.

  2. Enter your income

Your gross salary or pension for the year, and any interest or other income.

  3. Add old regime deductions

80C, 80D, NPS, home loan interest and HRA. Leave out anything you don’t have.

  4. Compare

The result shows the tax under each regime and how much the cheaper one saves you.

Questions

What are the new regime tax slabs for 2026-27?

Up to ₹4 lakh: nil. ₹4–8 lakh: 5%. ₹8–12 lakh: 10%. ₹12–16 lakh: 15%. ₹16–20 lakh: 20%. ₹20–24 lakh: 25%. Above ₹24 lakh: 30%. Budget 2026 kept the slabs introduced in 2025, and 4% cess is added on the tax.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free in the new regime?

Yes, for residents. A rebate cancels the tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above the limit, marginal relief makes sure you never pay more tax than the income above ₹12 lakh.

Which is better for me, the old or the new regime?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime usually wins unless you claim a lot: HRA on high rent, the full ₹1.5 lakh under 80C, health insurance and home loan interest together. Enter your real figures above and the calculator tells you which costs less.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

The tax-free part is the smallest of three amounts: the HRA you actually received, the rent you paid minus 10% of basic salary plus DA, and 50% of basic plus DA in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai (40% elsewhere). The rest of your HRA is taxed as salary. HRA exemption is only available in the old regime.

Which deductions are allowed in the new regime?

Mainly the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salary or pension and your employer’s NPS contribution, up to 14% of basic plus DA. 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest on a house you live in are not allowed.

Can I switch between the regimes every year?

Salaried people and pensioners can choose each year when they file their return. People with business or professional income can switch back to the old regime only once. The new regime applies unless you choose the old one.

Does this include capital gains?

No. Gains on shares, mutual funds and property are taxed at special rates and are left out here. Add short-term gains taxed at slab rates, such as on debt funds, to other income.
