Questions

What must a GST tax invoice show?

Your name, address and GSTIN; a unique invoice number and date; the customer’s name and address (and GSTIN if registered); the place of supply; each item’s description, HSN or SAC code, quantity, value and GST rate; the CGST, SGST or IGST amounts; and a signature. This generator includes all of them.

When do I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?

When the place of supply is in a different state from yours. Sales within your state carry CGST and SGST in equal halves; sales to another state carry IGST at the full rate. Choose the customer’s state and the invoice switches automatically.

What is the difference between a tax invoice and a bill of supply?

A tax invoice charges GST. A bill of supply is issued by businesses that can’t charge GST, such as those in the composition scheme or selling exempt goods, so it shows no tax.

Is HSN code mandatory on invoices?

Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must show at least 4-digit HSN codes on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on all invoices. Services use SAC codes, which start with 99.

Can I make an invoice without a GSTIN?

If you are not registered for GST you can’t charge GST, so choose ‘Bill of supply’ and leave the GSTIN empty. Your customer’s GSTIN is only needed when they are a registered business.

Are my details stored anywhere?

No. The invoice is made in your browser and nothing is uploaded. If you tick ‘Remember on this device’, your business details are saved in this browser only, and you can untick it to forget them.

Do I need e-invoicing instead?

Businesses above the e-invoicing turnover limit must also report B2B invoices on the government’s Invoice Registration Portal to get an IRN and QR code. Smaller businesses can use an invoice like this one.
