Questions
Why do I need rent receipts?
To claim the HRA exemption under the old tax regime, salaried employees show proof of rent to their employer, usually rent receipts, often with the rent agreement. Without proof, the employer deducts tax on your full HRA.
Is the landlord’s PAN required?
Yes, when the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh in the financial year (about ₹8,333 a month). Your employer asks for it and reports it. If your landlord has no PAN, they usually sign a declaration saying so.
When is a revenue stamp needed on a rent receipt?
When rent over ₹5,000 is paid in cash, the receipt should carry a ₹1 revenue stamp signed across by the landlord. Payments by UPI, bank transfer or cheque don’t need one. Choose ‘Cash’ and a box for the stamp is added.
Do I still need receipts if I pay rent by UPI or bank transfer?
Many employers still ask for receipts even with a bank trail. The receipt states what the payment was for and who received it; keep your UPI or bank statements as backup.
Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?
Yes, if you really pay the rent and your parent owns the house. Your parent must show the rent as income in their tax return. You can’t claim HRA for rent paid to your spouse.
Does HRA help in the new tax regime?
No. The HRA exemption is only available in the old regime. Use our income tax calculator to see which regime is better for you before you collect receipts.
